Gentle art rock from accomplished bassist and friends.

Having performed with Tim Bowness, Plenty and The Swan Chorus, in recent years, bassist David K Jones has proven himself a varied and skilled musician. His first solo LP, which refines material recorded more than two decades ago, showcases him as an equally capable songwriter. Its best song, World Keeps Turning, is a meditative ballad in which Bowness sings wistfully over a sparse piano and programmed percussion.

It’s precisely this sort of haunting simplicity that allows tracks such as the uplifting That Summer and the John Wilkinson-led ode to Jeff Buckley,

Last Cigarette, to be so appealing. It’s not all softly spoken and downtrodden affairs, though, as a few other standouts are far more energetic and multilayered. Irresistible starter Rescue Me is even ripe with new age instrumentation and buoyancy, whereas the jazzier

Don’t Go makes great use of Jenny Whittaker’s pained voice before the synth-heavy Spin adds electrified feistiness. A couple of less engaging and singular selections aside (namely, the cheesy Crazy Rain and Footprints In The Sand), Days In Corners is a touching and tasteful debut.
